RIDGELINE INSTALLATION FOR ONDURA ROOFS

Printable PDF versions of both types of installation are located on the right side of the page.

Preparing the Roof

1. Using a chalk line, cut a 1 1/4" slot measured horizontally along the top of the ridge (See Fig. 1 and Fig. 2). The slot should not exceed the gable ends.

2. Install Ondura sheets or tiles as instructed in the Ondura Installation Guide, making certain the sheets or tile end evenly with the solid decking.

Installing the Ondura Ridge Endcap

1. Ondura endcaps must be installed at each end of the ridge, as weather guards, before applying the ridgevent.

2. To install the ridge endcap, place an Ondura ridge cap at the end of the ridge, allowing it to project out 3 to 6 inches. Insert closure strips, and drive Ondura nails through the ridge piece, closure strips, and every crown of the underlying sheets or tile (See Fig. 3).

3. Next, cut three to six inches along the crown portion of the ridge end cap projection out from the end. Fold down resulting flaps and nails (See Fig. 4).

4. Repeat this same procedure at the other end of the ridge.

Installing the Ridge Vent

1. Insert a vent endcap into the ridgevent, and place the vent approximately 6" from the end of the roof. Position closure strips between vent and Ondura sheet. Nail the four corners with 4" nails, making certain the nail penetrates the vent, closure strip, and the corrugation crown. If using Ondura 4" nails, remove washer before nailing vent. Butt each additional section and nail in the same manner. A chalk line may be helpful to ensure vent alignment. Cut the last piece to length, insert endcap, and install with the finished end to the outside. Ridgevent endcaps are required on exposed ends only (See Fig. 2 and Fig. 5).

Finishing the Ridgeline

1. Lay the first Ondura ridge cap on top of the ridgevent allowing 1/2" overhang on the end and 1/4" overhang on the sides. Nail one Ondura 4" washered nail on each side, at the first corrugation crown of the underlying Ondura sheets or tile. Nails must penetrate vent, closure, Ondura and decking (See Fig. 6).

2. Next, lay the second ridgecap on top of the first, leaving an 8" exposure. Nail in the same manner and ontinue until the entire ridge cap is complete (See Fig. 2). Note: After the first cap is nailed into place, 8" exposure allows every nailed corner of ridge cap to align with every other corrugation of Ondura underneath.

Finishing the Eaves

1. Insert Ondura Ventilated Closure Strips under the Ondura sheet or tile at the base of the roof and nail into position (See Fig. 7).

Important: Ridgeline Ridgevents should always be installed in combination with a balanced soffit vent system. As with any roof venting system, severe winter weather conditions may necessitate temporary sealing off of the vents to prevent snow infiltration.

RIDGELINE INSTALLATION FOR SHINGLED ROOFS

1. (For new construction, delete this step.) Remove ridge cap shingles along the entire length of the ridge. When installing the Ridgeline Vent, all gable end vents & other forms of roof vent openings must be closed off. However, a balanced soffit vent system is necessary.

2. Parallel to both sides of the ridge, snap a chalk line no more than 1 1/2 inches from the center of the ridge. Majority of baffle must rest on roof deck. (Roofs with a greater pitch may require a smaller opening.)

3. Cut along both chalk lines & remove the top sheathing*. The slot should not exceed gable ends. A bead of caulk may be applied along the opening.

*Note: The slot cut into the roof ride must be a minimum or 12 inches from any junction point--such as intersecting roof ridge, chimney or any other obstruction.

4. For appearance and balanced ventilation, the Ridgeline Vent should be isntalled along the entire length of the ridge. Start with the first piece, insert the end cap and postion it at one end of the ridge, at the end of the roof. (The end cap keeps out moisture and insects.)

5. Use 2-inch roofing nails to anchor the vent through the baffle (as shown) at four corners only. Butt each additional section until the entire ridge is covered. A second chalk line may be helpful to insure vent alignment. Never use pneumatic fastening equipment.

6. Cut the last piece to length and install with the finished end to the outside. Insert the end cap before nailing into position. End caps are required on the exposed ends only.

7. Install new ridgecap shingles over the ridgevent, using 2-inch roofing nails. Nailing the ridge caps through the baffle area will secure the vent. Shingles may need to be trimmed.

8. Ridge-to-ridge application requires a mitre cut to maintain continuous ridge line appearance.

9. Ridge-to-roof application requires a mitre cut to maintain continuous ridge line appearance.
